It's old school meets new technology with the handheld Color FX II: Ms. Pacman game, a miniaturized makeover of the classic arcade favorite. It would be a tempting overstatement to suggest that, in the intervening 20-plus years, the color LCD graphics of this new format have surpassed those of the quarter-gobbling original, but the Color FX II (powered by four AA batteries, not included) does provide a faithful re-creation of the traditional Ms. Pacman pursuit. Players still direct that rose-colored cutie through the maze as she chomps as many dots as possible while eluding the green ghosts. The FX II, with its slick, translucent mauve chassis, features optional arcade sounds; although, with six control buttons, it's a bit of a shame that the Ms. Pacman navigation function--in all four directions--has been shoe-horned onto one button smaller than your thumb. And, depending on the brightness of your room, the display tends to be a little on the dark side. But, quibbles aside, whether you're nostalgic for or curious about arcade history, there's a lot to like in this original palm pilot. --Tony Mason
